Haiti
Climate Change In Haiti
Although Haiti is not probably the country you think of when thinking about who will be affected by climate change in the next 20 years, it should be. For one, the country is and island and mainly coastline. One of the largest side affects from climate change, is the ice caps melting causing sea levels around the world to rise which would flood many key cities in Haiti. Another reason is that while deforestation is a major concern across the globe, it is especially critical in Haiti as wood makes up around half of the fuel in the nation. One of the biggest reasons however are hurricanes, Haiti is located on the belt where Atlantic hurricanes cause the most damage. As climate change worsens, hurricanes become stronger, wreaking more havoc on the areas they affect which would further worsen the economy and infrastructure in Haiti. Another natural cause that could damage Haiti is the large amount of giant landslides that occur in the central, steep areas. All of this paired with the already fragile economy and social structure in the nation is why Haiti will be affected much more than its neighbors by climate change.
